Break Out Sessions – Catalogs

What standard components should we adopt now?

-         THREDDS and GCMD

-         We ought to support the ISO 1911x standards. Question is whether everyone has access to the standard.

-         It would be nice to put existing ESP ISO 19115 schemas on the ESP web site for other projects to learn from when creating catalogs

-         We discussed that there may be different levels of catalog information.  A higher level ‘discovery’ type catalog and an inventory level catalog that contains more detailed information on individual holdings.  How these levels interoperate within ESP was not clear.

-         Discussed the dichotomy of users, such as expert users versus less knowledgeable users.

What software could meet ESP requirements?

-         Need to continue to investigate tools to harvest from files, to jump start the metadata. It would be nice to have any harvesting scripts listed on the ESP web site

-         More metadata authoring tools and list the existing ones on the ESP web site.

Where should we push new technologies?

-         develop DocBuilder to support an generic XML schema or DTD to support other

-         Tools should be extensible to support other XML schema describing Metadata such as ISO

-         Create a repository of XML crosswalks and the related XSLT style sheets.

-         We request each to have a published SOAP API for interoperability and look for as much commonality as possible or necessary with the OpenGIS community.

-         Further, we suggest investigating the creation of a UDDI  registry for ESP
